Growing a Garden on Your Patio

If you have a patio that is all set up but seems to be missing something, consider planting a garden.

Gardens don’t have to grow in the ground. With deep enough pots, you can create a beautiful flower, vegetable, or even shrub garden right on your balcony. This guide will help you do just that!

Any garden of course needs plants. You can purchase potted plants, or you can grow the plants yourself. All you’ll need is soil, fertilizer, plants, water, and pots. Consider how you want to grow the plants. As mentioned, you can buy fully matured plants, or you can start from seeds or sprouts. Buying sprouted young plants is much easier than starting from seeds, but if you have a green thumb or just want to give it a try, go ahead and buy seeds. Take note of how much sun the seeds need, as this is very important. Avoid squashes, pumpkins, and sunflowers, as these can grow very large and take over your space. You may also want to purchase lattice and plant a vine, climbing roses, or climbing flowers such as morning glories, honeysuckle, or sweet pea.

Consider what you want to plant. Do you want a vegetable garden, an herb garden, a flower garden, or all three? Good flowers to grow include bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and irises. You can also plant annuals like marigolds, snapdragons, pansies, and lavender. These all grow well in sunlight, provided your patio is not covered. If it is covered, no problem—just search for plants that grow in shade, such as forget-me-nots, primroses, Siberian irises, bellflowers, and violets.

For your vegetable garden, the sky is the limit—with the exception of vegetables that grow too large and unwieldy. Be sure to check how large the plant will grow before purchasing it. Some vegetables that are easy to grow include tomatoes, potatoes, snap peas, hot peppers, cucumber, and kale.

If you want an herb garden, most herbs are easy to grow. Consider options like basil, peppermint, rosemary, and sage. You can use these to flavor your food when cooking.

If you want to make your garden wildlife-friendly, consider adding a bird bath and bird feeders. You can also plant flowers, edible shrubs such as gooseberry and redcurrant, and even plant a fruit tree with a bird nesting box next to the patio. This will attract wildlife such as birds, butterflies, and honeybees.

In order to enjoy your garden, you’ll of course need to have a place to sit and relax! There are all kinds of patio furniture options, from couch sets to tables to lawn chairs. Be sure to keep good care of your garden. Did you know that the number one cause of death to houseplants is overwatering? You want to keep the soil moist, but not drenched or muddy. Fertilize the plants every two-to-three weeks, being careful to follow the instructions on the box, as you do not want to over-fertilize the plants.  Just as with water, more is not better.

Enjoy your garden! Enjoy the birds and butterflies it attracts, the beautiful flowers, and the tasty vegetables and herbs. Consider picking up a gardening book to help improve your skills.
